1939 Academy Awards

The lavish Biltmore hotel was the site of the 11th Awards show. Best actor, that would fall to Spencer Tracy as Father Flannigan in Boystown .

Mickey Rooney, who was 19, won the Academy Juvenile award.

MGM in 1938, when Boystown was made, also bought in to another group of boys by purchasing the rights to Our Gang. Meanwhile, in 1939, Culver City is taken over by  munchkins. The Wizard of Oz goes in production. This to me is the greatest movie ever made. Unsurpassed old school special  effects, along with a Victor Hugo story that makes even more sense now!

That was the landscape 80 years ago. I share now a letter I found tucked away in an office while exploring the backlot.
